Senior/Staff Frontend Engineer
Remote (US) · Full-time
Build accessible React experiences on VA.gov that millions of Veterans rely on. Senior and staff levels, remote across the United States.
About the role
Selara is hiring frontend engineers to work on VA.gov, the digital front door for the Department of Veterans Affairs. The features you ship reach millions of Veterans who use VA.gov to apply for benefits, manage their health care, and track their claims. The frontend is a large, long-lived React codebase, and part of the job is moving it forward, not just adding to it.
This is one posting for two levels. We calibrate senior against staff during the interview process based on the scope you have owned and the impact you have driven.
What you'll do
- Build and ship user-facing features in the VA.gov frontend
- Write modern React as your default, using function components, hooks, and TypeScript, and help migrate older class components and Redux patterns toward that standard
- Compose interfaces from the VA Design System so every experience is consistent, responsive, and meets WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508
- Integrate against REST APIs served by the VA.gov platform and handle loading, error, and offline states honestly
- Strengthen test coverage with component tests and browser-level end-to-end tests, and leave the suites faster and more trustworthy than you found them
- Review code, improve CI feedback loops, and share context generously with a distributed team
- At the staff level, set technical direction across teams, mentor senior engineers, and drive migrations that outlast any single feature
What we're looking for
- Deep experience building production React applications, with modern patterns as your starting point rather than your aspiration
- Fluency in TypeScript and current JavaScript tooling
- A track record of shipping accessible interfaces and treating accessibility as a requirement, not a cleanup task
- Experience integrating with and debugging against REST APIs
- Strong testing instincts across unit, component, and end-to-end layers
- Comfort with Git-based collaboration, code review, and CI on GitHub
- Clear written communication in a remote, distributed team
- For staff, a history of leading architecture decisions and raising the engineering bar beyond your own commits
Nice to have
- Experience with VA.gov, the vets-website codebase, or another large civic-tech frontend
- Familiarity with the US Web Design System or another mature design system
- Experience with Playwright or Cypress at scale
- Federal delivery experience, including working under a Public Trust
Location and eligibility
This role is fully remote within the United States. Work on VA.gov requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal Public Trust suitability determination, which includes a background investigation.
